Hacking History: Smut Edition

Every year in Hacking History we work with community partners to build historical websites. We emphasize community engagement, public-facing capstone projects, and real-life skills that mobilize your historical expertise. We study the history of digital media and the public sphere, topics related to our course project, and basic web development skills. The curriculum builds on that of HIS393: Digital History, which is recommended as preparation, but by no means required.

This year we return to our Toronto roots and partner with the Sexual Representation Collection, currently housed in the basement of University college. The collection contains a fascinating range of materials devoted to struggles around sexual freedom, LGBTQ rights, censorship, freedom of speech, and pornography.

Students will work on a variety of projects highlighting historical issues related to the collection. Subject matter will intersect with Sexual Diversity Studies, Women and Gender Studies, and Canadian History. Sign up for HIS455Y1-Y on ROSI now and join us for a year of hacking smut’s history!
